SUMMER FLY CONTROL
The heat and humidity of the last few weeks has dramatically increased fly populations and we have seen the first few cases of
summer mastitis.
Treat heifers and dry cows at risk with an effective product.
SWISH launched last year with very positive feedback Lasts up to 8 weeks
2.5L packs come with a very effective pour- on gun. Dose for a cow is 30mls.
COOPERS SPOT-ON
A cost effective and easy way to decrease fly exposure.
FLYPOR
A traditional pour- on
Dose 40mls
Lasts 4-6 weeks
For sheep and lambs
to prevent Blowfly and Strike
For prevention two main products to be used before strike
CLIK
Lasts up to 16 weeks
VETRAZIN
Lasts 8-10 weeks
When active disease is present use DYSECT
Lasts 8-10 weeks
CATTLE WORMERS FOR 2011
Traditionally we recommend the use of Cydectin pour-on as a conventional high quality wormer for all ages of cattle throughout the grazing season and at housing.
Older cattle in their second season at grass do not need to be wormed until late June/ July when a cheaper wormer like Enovex-Pour on can be used and cattle moved to fresh grass.
Some clients may prefer to use other brands such as Dectomax or Closamectin depending on individual farm requirements.
ISOLATION FACILITIES
Many of our clients use a DARD licensed isolation facility to avoid having animals on standstill for 6 days on farm.
We now require an ordinance survey map of your farmyard which can be obtained from your local DARD office at Portaferry road.
BOVICALC /PREVENTION OF MILK FEVER
Clinical and subclinical milk fever can to a large extent be prevented through transition cow dietary management and nutrition.
However things do not always go to plan and outbreaks of milk fever occur due to use of a different forage or an increase in grass availability.
Older cows, cows with MF history and fat cows are particularly at risk.
For those groups or individuals at risk of milk fever, oral calcium can be supplied prior to the risk period.
BOVICALC is an oral calcium supplement bolus containing both rapid release and slow release calcium.
Bovicalc is best used starting immediately prior to calving and will reduce the risk of milk fever. It may also be used in clinical cases to prevent reoccurence
Around time of calving
1st Bolus prior to calving
2nd Bolus immediately after calving
Follow up 2 further boluses at12-15 hour intervals
DRY COW THERAPY
Latest research work shows that a lot of mastitis that occurs in the first 100 days of lactation occurs as a result of infections picked up during the dry period.
Double tubing cows at drying off with ORBESEAL plus a conventional antibiotic tube can help decrease mastitis incidence in the first part of lactation.
Pay particular attention to teat preparation. Swab teat ends before tubing!!
Double tubing also helps prevent summer mastitis !!
Sheep naturally know when to breed by sensing the lengthening nights as autumn approaches.
As the eyes detect decreasing daylength the pineal gland releases melatonin, which switches on the reproductive system
Regulin is a small subcut. implant which releases melatonin and mimics natural melatonin release
Latest research work shows that as well as moving the date of lambing forward the product will also
· Improve fertility
· Improve lamb numbers
· Compact lambing
· Give normal return to season
· Consistently increase lambing% by 20%
Regulin can therefore be used within the normal breeding season to increase lamb numbers. Converts singles to twins.
Take rams away from sight and sounds of ewes. 7days later implant ewes 35 days later introduce rams or teasers. Peak mating 2-3 weeks later.
Rams can also be implanted which will improve libido and semen volume.
Recent studies have demonstrated a 40% reduction in cases of mastitis when cattle are double tubed with antibiotic and sealant tubes!
A trial involving commercial dairy farms has found 40% fewer cases of clinical mastitis in the first 100 days of lactation in cows dried off with a combination of long-acting dry cow antibiotic and internal teat sealant, compared to cows dried off with the same dry cow tube alone.
It also found a marked difference in the severity of mastitis as indicated by the prescence or absence of fever.
In cows dried off with antibiotic tubes alone 39% of clinical mastitis cases involved fever, compared to 7% in cows dried off with the antibiotic plus teat sealant combination.
Herds involved in the trial were cubicle housed and producing at least 8000litres per cow
WORMING STRATEGY FOR SHEEP
Do your lambs or sheep need wormed??
Instead of guessing why not save some money and time
Take some dung samples and we can tell you whether or not its time to worm.
Faecal egg count <300
No need to worm
Faecal egg count > 500 beneficial to worm
ZOLVIX SHEEP WORMER
Unique mode of action to aid worm resistance management in lowland flocks.
Use as a dose for bought in sheep in Quarantine
Use once mid season in lambs to remove accumulated resistant worm burden.
Only 7 day meat withhold
Please note Zolvix has little persistent activity unlike some other products but it will remove any resistant worms to other drug classes.
SHEEP EXPORTS
The practice is now handling sheep exports to mainland UK, ROI or Europe for DARD.
Application forms can be collected at the surgery
Please return these 5 working days in advance of exportation date
