Remember, Remember the 5th of November...
Firework time is coming again and it can be a time owners of dogs with noise phobias dread. Don’t panic though as help is at hand at JVC. For some more mildly affected pets, closing curtains and turning the radio or TV on loudly during firework time can be enough to distract them. Recently natural pet appeasement pheromones have become very popular. DAP DIFFUSERS mimic natural hormones expressed by a nursing mother to calm pets down. They are available as sprays, diffusers or collars and are available from reception. They work best if used at least a month before the fireworks start. Some more badly affected dogs need medication with combinations of beta blockers and sedatives. A new Valium like drug has also recently become available. Make an appointment with one of our vets to see what combination will suit your pet best on 0289181226
Please note our old tried and tested tranquiliser ACP has been shown to be contraindicated for noise phobia.
Antifreeze warning!
Cold weather is coming and many of us will use antifreeze in our cars at this time of year. Spillage of this either accidentally or from a leak from the car can prove fatal to inquisitive pets. Antifreeze (ethylene glycol) is sweet and pets will drink it. It causes calcium oxalate crystals to form in the kidneys destroying kidney function and it also can cause fits. Keep this potential poison away from animals and children. Prompt veterinary intervention can be life saving but clearly prevention is better than cure.
Fleas and worms
Traditionally in the winter months people believed that flea populations died down due to the cold weather. Houses are nearly all centrally heated now and we no longer get this reprieve. Don’t let fleas get the upper hand. Keep using our flea products which are both effective and simple to apply. Frontline is on offer at the minute. Buy 3 get one free.Nurse clinics:

Pet insurance
In the current financial environment peoples finances are understandably more stretched. We do not wish your pet any misfortune but perhaps now is a time to seriously consider putting some funds away in a reputable pet insurer in case your pet gets ill. There are several types of policy including Lifetime/ covered for life, Time limited and Maximum benefit policies. JVC would recommend insurance with a PETPLAN lifetime/covered for life policy. Always read your insurance small print. If you have any questions please feel free to ask a member of staff.
